Allegany & Garrett County, MD Land Patents Noted in Deacon's Survey of 1787 (Page 1)
From 1700 to 1769

Last Update: May 13, 2011

   Alphabetical      1700 to 1769      1770 and On

A collaborative effort to transcribe Allegany & Garrett County hand-written land patents and deeds.

Early land patents and deeds often have valuable references to roads, creeks, houses, mills and other landmarks. Ofttimes these are the only recorded information on the location of a landmark. Images of the original hand-written documents are available from the MD State Archives. By transcribing the images to text and posting them online, it makes the information accessible through online searches.

I have provided links to images (.jpg) of the original documents as noted below ("Orig."). In most cases, I've started with the earliest land patents and worked forward.

Land patents surveys are usually a 85% mix legal "heretofores and therefores", 13% property size and survey information and maybe 2% valuable descriptive information. Since it's the 2% we're after, it's easier to transcribe that and leave the rest for later.

If you would like to help transcribe the documents, please contact me by email and let me know which document you want to work on. (More patents coming...)

All original patent images, before edited for size, are courtesy of the MD State Archives - MDLandRec.net. Most patent listings below contain the information to find the patent on MDLandRec.Net. The website will ask for your password and you can apply for one, online, for free. BTW, the easiest way to search is to go to the page titled "Specific County" Land Survey, Subdivision, and Condominium Plats. In the lower list, select "Certificates, Patented" or Certificates, Unpatented" and search by number.

 Location:

Beginning at a bounded White Oak standing on the side of a hill near the head of a small branch that falleth into Little Cunolloway and on the left hand side of the Main Road that goes from the said Little Cunoloway's Creek to the Old Town and near where said road crosses Conoloway's Hill..

I've included this land patent from Western Washington County because of the mention of a "Main Road" from Little Conolloway(sic) Creek to Old Town. I believe Little Conolloway Creek (In all it's spellings) is Little Tonoloway Creek and the hill is Tonoloway Ridge. The Beanes property is located on the Ridge near a branch of the creek and next to the Main Road.

What intrigues me is Capt. Thomas Cresap didn't patent "Indian Fields" until 1742 and yet the Colemore patent talks of a main road to the area. Furthermore, Fort Frederick wasn't completed until 1757 and a road from the fort to Fort Cumberland wasn't proposed until 1758 (Built in 1770).
